Valley is a city steeped in tradition in Chambers County, Alabama, United States. Originally book-ended on the Northern and Southern city limits by twin signs which declared, "Welcome to Valley, Alabama, Where people care and share," the signs no longer stand, but the spirit remains. Valley was incorporated in 1980 combining the four textile mill villages of Fairfax, Langdale, Riverview, and Shawmut; a fifth, Huguley lies adjacent to the incorporated city and is widely considered part of the Valley. Located on Interstate 85 halfway between Montgomery, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia, Valley is 75 miles southwest of Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and 85 miles northeast of Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) in Montgomery. The city lies on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, the state border between Alabama and Georgia. The Kia Motors automotive plant is located 7 miles to the east on I-85. Valley is an "Alabama Community of Excellence", one of only eight in the state. It is the principal city of and is included in the Valley, Alabama Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Gainesville, GA-AL CSA Combined Statistical Area.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.7 square miles (25 km2), all of it land.
Valley has a larger Micropolitan Statistical Area known as the "Greater Valley Area" consisting of the three largest cities of Chambers County, Valley, Lanett, and La Fayette. It also includes the city of West Point, Georgia.
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 9,198 people, 3,832 households, and 2,605 families residing in the city. The population density was 944.2 people per square mile (364.6/km²). There were 4,194 housing units at an average density of 430.5 per square mile (166.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 70.17% White, 28.78% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.11% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,832 households out of which 28.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,395, and the median income for a family was $37,963. Males had a median income of $30,159 versus $21,325 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,008. About 12.0% of families and 14.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.6% of those under age 18 and 17.1% of those age 65 or over.
Valley is served by the Columbus, Georgia Television Designated Market Area (DMA). Comcast and Knology provide cable television service. DirecTV and Dish Network provide direct broadcast satellite television including both local and national channels to area residents.
